Start with clear definitions

A report can show activity without showing business results. Separate being discovered from receiving an inquiry and winning the work.

Our recommended reporting sequence is simple: search visibility, website visits, contact actions, genuine inquiries, qualified opportunities, and customers. Decide what each stage means for your business before configuring tracking. A qualified inquiry might mean that the person needs a service you provide, is within your operating area, and can be contacted. Use the same definition from month to month.

A phone-link click is not a completed call

Tapping a phone number may open a dialer, but the person can still cancel, reach voicemail, or ask about something you do not provide. Google explicitly distinguishes mobile phone-number click tracking from tracking actual phone calls.

Google Ads offers call tracking options that use forwarding numbers and can count calls meeting a chosen duration threshold, where supported and correctly configured. That provides different evidence from a link click. A long call still does not automatically mean a qualified prospect or a sale.

Our recommendation is to name the metrics accurately: “phone-link clicks,” “tracked calls,” and “qualified inquiries.” Review call outcomes in the business’s own records. Otherwise, the same person clicking a number and then calling can make a report appear more successful than the underlying result.

Record a lead when a real request succeeds

Google Analytics recommends the generate_lead event when someone submits a form or request for information. These recommended events require implementation; they are not automatically sent simply because a website has Analytics installed.

For an inquiry form, our recommended setup records the event after the submission succeeds, rather than when someone merely presses the button. Test the success state, error state, and repeated clicks. A failed request should not look like a new lead, and one successful request should not be counted twice because two tracking methods fire.

Google also provides later-stage events, including qualify_lead and close_convert_lead. Those can help connect the initial inquiry with later outcomes when the website and customer-management setup support it. They should reflect real business records, not assumptions based on time spent on a page.

Respect the visitor’s measurement choices

Consent-aware measurement means that tracking behavior follows the choices the visitor has made. Google’s consent-mode documentation separates obtaining a choice, communicating it to Google, and ensuring the tags behave accordingly. Installing consent mode alone does not create a complete consent experience.

There are different implementations. Basic consent mode prevents Google tags from loading until consent; advanced mode can send measurements without cookies while relevant consent is denied. Do not describe every consent-mode setup as collecting no data before consent.

Our practical recommendation is to document what is measured and test both acceptance and rejection paths. Keep inquiry details in the system intended to handle the request. Review the privacy and consent requirements that apply to the business before activating measurement; the appropriate setup depends on your visitors and tools.

Use Search Console to understand discovery

Search Console’s Performance report shows clicks, impressions, click-through rate, and average position in Google Search. You can examine queries, pages, devices, and time periods. These are discovery metrics; they do not confirm that somebody called or hired you.

Our recommendation is to compare similar periods and focus on the service pages that matter to the business. An increase in impressions can mean the site is appearing more often without bringing proportionately more visits. Investigate the page and search terms before calling that a success or failure.

Average position is an aggregate metric, not a guarantee that every customer sees the same ranking. Google explains that results vary with factors including the searcher’s location, device, time, and history.

Make the report useful enough to act on

Finish each review with one concrete decision: repair a form, clarify a service page, adjust advertising coverage, or improve follow-up. Keep the definitions visible in the report so that a click never quietly becomes a customer.

Good measurement supports decisions. It should not manufacture certainty that the underlying records cannot support.

Your practical checklist

  • Define contact actions, genuine enquiries, qualified opportunities and customers separately.
  • Label phone-link clicks distinctly from tracked calls and qualified conversations.
  • Verify that successful submissions are recorded once and failed attempts are not counted as leads.
  • Test measurement against the visitor’s consent choices and keep enquiry details out of analytics.
  • Compare consistent reporting periods and finish each review with one concrete decision.

One useful next step

Trace one test enquiry from the website through its saved record, staff notification and analytics event, then document exactly what each system counts.
