Translate the three measurements into customer experiences

Largest Contentful Paint, or LCP, tracks when the largest qualifying visible content element appears. Google’s good threshold is 2.5 seconds or less. For an owner, the question is whether the main content becomes available promptly. A slowly delivered hero photograph may be relevant, but the report and developer investigation should identify the actual element.

Interaction to Next Paint, or INP, measures responsiveness to interactions; its good threshold is 200 milliseconds or less. Cumulative Layout Shift, or CLS, measures unexpected layout movement, with 0.1 or less considered good. Imagine a menu reacting late, or a quote button moving as an image loads. These are different problems and may need different fixes.

The field thresholds are assessed at the 75th percentile, separately for mobile and desktop. In plain language, that describes a level reached by at least three quarters of measured visits, rather than the result of your single test.

Know which part of the report you are reading

PageSpeed Insights combines real-user data, where available, with a simulated Lighthouse test. Its field data covers a trailing 28-day period. A fresh fix therefore may improve a new test before the historical user data fully reflects the change. Check whether the report describes this individual URL or a broader origin, and whether enough field data is available.

Our recommendation is to record the tested URL, device view, date and the exact result you are discussing. “Our website scored 70” is not a useful brief by itself. The homepage and a booking page may behave differently. A single simulated score is a diagnostic snapshot, not a count of lost customers or proof that the entire website works well.

Give your developer a prioritised question

Choose your most important enquiry page first. Ask which issue users experience, what resource or behaviour causes it and what change is proposed. Request a before-and-after comparison using the same page and test conditions, plus a check that forms and navigation still function. This keeps the work tied to a usable customer journey.

Illustrative brief: “On the mobile service page, the main photograph appears late and pushes the quote section downward. Please identify the loading and layout causes, propose a fix and verify that the enquiry form still submits.” This describes an observed problem without pretending to know whether hosting, image delivery, scripts or layout code is responsible.

Use a small improvement log

Record what changed and when: image delivery, a removed widget, script loading or a layout correction. Avoid changing several unrelated things while also rewriting the offer if you want to understand the effect of each change. Review field trends after sufficient new data accumulates, and check new lab results immediately for obvious regressions.

Do not delete a necessary booking tool solely because it appears in a warning list. Consider whether it can load more efficiently or be opened only when needed. Judge technical improvements alongside real enquiry completion and service usability. A fast empty page does not answer customer questions; a detailed page still needs a workable loading and interaction experience.

Your practical checklist

  • Test an important enquiry page, not only the homepage.
  • Record the URL, device view and date.
  • Distinguish field data from simulated results.
  • Identify loading, interaction and movement problems separately.
  • Ask for evidence supporting the proposed fix.
  • Check forms and navigation after changes.

One useful next step

Run your main service URL through PageSpeed Insights and send your developer one specific question about the most relevant issue.
